Year 9 Design and Technology Posted: 23/06/23
Over the course of the term, Year 9 have been working on their woodwork skills making full use of the equipment we now have in the workshops. Their project was to accurately measure out and make a wooden box comprised of four different types of box joint. After practicing and building on their woodwork skills form Year 8, they have been able to construct a box using a lap joint, mitre joint, finger joint and dowel joint.
As well as woodwork skills, the students also had to work to a design brief and a theme - Design Movements of the 20th Century. After researching the key features of the various movements, students were then asked to design a lid for their box to represent their chosen design movement. The lid design was drawn out on a computer using CAD software, which was then transferred over to the laser cutter for the design to be engraved into the surface of the acrylic and cut.
Despite not having access to workshops during Year 7 and Year 8, the students have made a tremendous effort and have produced some very accurate boxes to be used either for phone and cable storage or jewellery, and I am very proud of the progress they have made.
