Latin and Classic Enrichment Posted: 22/09/23

We meet every Wednesday to explore Roman culture, language, beliefs and architecture to reveal a vibrant and exciting world.

The Latin and Classic Enrichment at Wren Enfield aims to transport learners back in time, almost 2000 years ago to ancient Rome and Pompeii.

We meet every Wednesday to explore Roman culture, language, beliefs and architecture to reveal a vibrant and exciting world.  Not only do we explore the past, but in studying Latin, we look for connections with the present as Latin is the root of many European languages.

So far, we have explored the cultural background of a Roman household belonging to Caecilius who was a wealthy banker living in Pompeii during the first century AD. We decoded some Latin stories to learn more about Caecilius’s family and we have even had a go at creating some Roman villas and mosaics. This helped us to reconstruct a model of Caecilius’s house which can still be visited in modern day Pompeii.

This week we created some Latin birthday cards and in later sessions we will be exploring Roman mythology, Roman theatre and the Roman military among other cultural aspects to gain a broader understanding of this period of history.

Here are some insights from our Classicists in this enrichment:

"I enjoy this enrichment because, I like learning about history like this, and ancient Rome is one of my favourite topics. I’m looking forward to when we learn about mythology, because when it comes to history, my area of expertise is Roman and Greek mythology." - Ryan, 10 Strand

"I like this this enrichment because I like history and wanted to learn about Latin. I have enjoyed learning the Latin phrases we use today like ‘vice versa’ and ‘carpe diem’. I look forward to learning about the Roman military and Roman Britain." - Samuel, 8 Strand

"I like this enrichment because it is interesting leaning about something different that you don’t usually learn. So far I have enjoyed making the Roman villas out of paper and how these villas used to be decorated. I am looking forward to learning more Latin and how it forms the roots of some different words that we use today." -Sophie, 10 Strand

"I love learning about History, so learning about Latin and culture from thousands of years ago is really interesting. I found out Latin can actually relate to much of today's modern English language." - Will, 9 Holborn
