Year 9 RS Trip to Oxford University Posted: 3/02/23

Students were able to enjoy a tour of the beautiful grounds of Christ Church College, learning about the history and quirks of the college.

A group of Year 9 students were chosen to go on a Religious Studies trip to Oxford University.  The focus on this trip was to give students a taste of life at a prestigious Oxbridge College as well as an introduction to reading Theology at university level.

The day began with a student meeting at Wren Academy Finchley. This trip was a joint effort across the Trust and it was fantastic seeing our students creating friendships across the schools.  After an initial briefing about the day, we began our journey to Oxford University.  Once we arrived at Christ Church College, we were given an introductory talk about the courses on offer as well as providing the students an opportunity to ask questions.

Students then heard from three students currently studying at Oxford.  A student studying History, one studying Biology and lastly a student studying Theology and Philosophy.  The students gave us an overview of their courses, gave expertise on how to prepare for applications and what they appreciated most about their studies.  The students were then able to enjoy a tour of the beautiful grounds of Christ Church College, learning about the history and quirks of the college.

After a complimentary lunch at the Hall of Christ Church College, we then took a short walk to Worcester College.  There students had the opportunity to take part in a taster lecture on the Theology of Harry Potter.  Then students were given the opportunity to tour Worcester College.

The day was incredibly fulfilling as a teacher, to see students excited, discussing their future, and engaging in discussions about higher education.  It was a privilege to accompany them on this trip and to have the opportunity to demonstrate the benefits of a Theology degree.

Here is what a few students had to say about the trip:

I enjoyed all aspects of the Oxford Trip but I particularly relished in being toured around the colleges of Christ Church and Worcester. Additionally, I liked participating in the Q&A sessions and being able to experience a taste of a theology lecture. I found it interesting that Oxford uses tutorials rather than whole class lectures. I think this would benefit learning as it focuses more on individual needs Olivia- Jo, 9 Ludgate

The Oxford trip was very enlightening to see what student life is like and meeting new people was fun. Listening to the students also gave me hope for courses. Christ Church College and Worcester College were also very beautiful. Listening to Philosophy also gave me ideas, questions and thoughts to think about after the day. Looking at Theology at a much higher level was also intriguing and let us think even deeper than a normal RS lesson. Charlie, 9 Walbrook

I felt that the Oxford trip was very enjoyable. There were many opportunities for us to ask questions of the staff and students at the two Oxford colleges that we visited. Though only in year 9, this trip gave me insight into what I would and would not like to study. I was amazed at how big the colleges were and how many students can be accommodated. I was also surprised by how Oxford allows students to stay on campus for the duration of their course. Overall, I was very grateful that I was given this amazing opportunity. Fayo, 9 Bow
